A look at yunis' 'Carthasis EP' on Twenty Twenty London
Following his exquisitely serene album, ‘Amber' released on the multiplex label YUKU, Berlin-based beatsmith yunis sharpens his instruments and chisels his way out of the chill zone. This time brought to you by Ivy Lab’s esteemed label Twenty Twenty London, ‘Catharsis’ is a five-track EP embodying the notion of purging repressed emotions through art in hopes to bring some relief and propel the dancefloor.
We’ve been well acquainted with yunis over many years now, his compelling multi-genre sonic palette always teeming with luxuriant visionary soundscapes across an array of halftime bass music styles & more. His ingenuity in nurturing ethnic percussion and tones are highly perceptible throughout the depths of his flowy bass frequencies. Absorbing all the influences he encounters, and inking them within his sonic paintings, framing a mind-bending escapade.
Drifting into the EP, opener ‘Acid’ is skewered between an acidic techno synth and a swanking halftime beat. As the track strides along with a dusting of vocal samples, the spuming lead synth warps as it melts away the varnish of its form.
Slicing into ‘Coldcuts’ for our second course, processed with clinky drums, oblique synths, and a bellowing tenderized low end. A malicious head-nodder bound to put the dance floor on ice.
A chunky synth riff echoes in the distance as the ‘Rumble’ begins. The repetitive nuanced riff coincides with the rickety percussion as the beat of the drums quake in a righteously hypnotizing stature.
Much like the previous track in terms of its mesmerizing nature, ‘Woofer’ surges out with a hounding granulated bass weight as if it's an enraged dog restrained on a leash. An absolute stomper bearing serrated clanky drums and a thumping bass that weaves its own menacing path.
Despite the title of the track, ‘Soft Taco’ it’s quite the opposite. Connecting with FRII on the track, they devour their wrath together into a gritty analog synth affixed with a thunderous bassline. The plucky snare lugs the louring riff and jingly tones as the beat sways with a rude manner before coasting off.
A befitting release from yunis on the imprint with a brilliant display, especially after sculpting his sound, and crushing halftime styles & beyond for many years. Significant to the current state of mind this EP comes forth with great justice to serve as a release for all of our frustrations with the world around us.
