A remarkable conception, Seppa’s ‘Elision’ LP on Slug Wife
It is always with great pleasure that we get a chance to explore the exceptional craftsmanship behind a Slug Wife release, especially one that has been curated by one of the label's main visionaries. Seppa continues to teeter on the fringe of contemporary bass music, pushing his sound even further leftfield with his latest LP ‘Elision’ - an incredible off kilter display of groovy breakbeats and chonky bass riffs, showered by a cacophony of mind-warping sound design
Seppa wrote this after the birth of his baby girl, contemplating the magic of conception between two counterparts and pertains to his passion for all that encompasses this new life.
‘Monsoon’ alludes to Seppa’s playful approach to production. An exquisite display of sonics that reflect a lullaby caught adrift in an ethereal stream. The track evolves in almost circus-esque fashion, dancing in tandem with exuberant instrumentation before cascading to a discordant close. A gentle introduction for the eccentric sequence that follows
Doused in intriguingly wonky lead lines ‘Epilogue’ and ‘Like That’ come in thick with that classic Seppa drumwork; Solid, powerful and cutting. The way both are frequently disrupted by outlandish fills makes for a continuously exciting experience.
Moving onto a personal favorite of mine ‘Warn’ is certainly more moody in contrast to the rest of the LP, with potentially a heavy influence from Slug Wife resident ‘Ben Pest’. It’s sorta like a schranz/berlin techno hybrid with more emphasis on articulating breakbeats than bolstering a four-to-the-flour groove. Whether consciously or subconsciously, it’s apparent the way the slugs inspire and encourage each other in the way they shape their sound and we are all here for it!
‘Fixt’ offers a seismic switch up with blisteringly energetic footwork percussion. Seppa goes in like a mad scientist who’s just discovered circuit bending, displacing the composition through freakish manipulation and distorted vocals. This is peak Seppa approaching fast paced form with vigor and vivacity.
As the momentum resolves with ‘Undertow’ we reach the LP’s periphery. A rumination of the first year of parenthood and reflection of life’s most significant events - the gift of life itself.
We at Rendah wish Seppa and his family a prosperous future, and invite you to support this fantastic release so that this may long continue. Elision is out now, and available here.
