Catching up with Rantik
Following up on his previous EP Persona on Incurzion Audio, Rantik is back diving into a new direction with his sound on his latest EP The Facade. The 20-year-old Newcastle-based producer has been crafting his sound for nearly 3 years now covering all spectrums of drum and bass while honing his own sound in the process. We first caught wind of Rantik in early 2020 through a free download release on Incurzion Audio and have been looking forward to more ever since. Introducing himself with his debut EP Persona in July of last year, we were intrigued by the versatility of his music. Striking a cord we kept our ears peeled.
Over the course of the year, we heard his sound develop more throughout a handful of singles. Few to mention, Hear My Rhythm is a huge funky stomper on We Are Incurzion Vol.1, the first massive various artists compilation on Incurzion Audio. 'Sonus' on the tremendous Stand Together charity compilation and “Predator” as a free download on Onyx Recordings. Around the same time as his debut single, Rantik alongside JAK launches their own imprint Northern Line Records in hopes to push the sound of up-and-coming producers around Newcastle as well as other international talents. Stay tuned for the interview below to hear more. 'The Facade', Rantik’s latest offering revitalizes his sound with 4 tracks that’ll take you on a flavorful journey.
You are also co-owner of Northern Line Records, How did NLR come to be? What inspired the label?
Northern Line was formed just over a year ago by JAK and I, with the idea of pushing the new talent from Newcastle while also showing off the talent from all over the UK and internationally. We noticed there was a big gap in the scene here that needed filling so we thought it was a great opportunity for us to try and push the music even more in Newcastle.
Any particular goal or plan you all had in mind?
The goal is to help new producers that are overlooked a chance to release music. The city is so small there’s a lot of friendly competition so it’s quite hard to get noticed, and also the majority of the scene up here relies on students so the spotlight is shone on a small number of artists. The idea is to break that by getting more people into drum and bass which would mean more eyes would be looking out for the new artists.
Looking forward to the talent you bring in! Any artists we should look out for coming through with the heat?
Some of the up-and-comers to look out for are artists like Big Sir, GH, Hillsy JAK, JTD, Myosin, RED, and there’s still more popping up!
Any forthcoming plans for the label you’d like to mention?
We have quite a few releases yet to come before the end of the year too, all very exciting stuff! To this date, we’ve only had one paid release which was a big various artists release that reached number 3 in the Juno charts back in March which was such an achievement for us. It had the likes of Hexa, Stompz, DJ hybrid, Stillz, Metal Work, Amplify, Elbi, Concept One then JAK and I. The plans that we have in place for this year and next year are super exciting too. The next release is from No Patterns, based in Reading, he’s a serious artist to look out for and has an EP with us in September - October time. We are constantly planning new releases with artists, running through new ideas on how to further the label and the scene in Newcastle. When we start putting events on we will definitely be getting the overlooked artists in front of a crowd! I'm really glad I've had the chance to contribute to our scene up here.
Lastly, future endeavors in the studio, what's the next step for Rantik?
There’s so much more I’m going to be trying as an artist to develop myself more. I want to get even more technical with my sound to make it more unique and since I'm going into my last year of university studying electronic music I really want to take the time to learn as much as I can to do that. I have also been thinking about starting production lessons and I'm in the early stages of getting that setup. I’ve got loads of releases lined up with some really exciting labels and I think this next year is going to be a big stepping stone for me because of what I have planned, and I can’t wait to show everyone what I’m made of.
