Exploring "Phantom Works" with Throe

InterviewsWritten by Colin Benson on

Throe, the UK-born and Vietnam-based co-manager of Unchained Recordings, is an artist whose versatility across bass music genres continues to move forward to new heights. Having previously released tracks on respected imprints like Incurzion Audio and Redacted, Throe has built a reputation for delivering intricate sound design and genre-bending production.

His latest endeavor, the Phantom Works EP, is no exception, diving deep into the realms of Drum and Bass while weaving in breaks and a cheeky halftime twist in collaboration with Portugal based duo Fake Two Piece. Relocating to Vietnam has further fueled Throe's creative exploration, influencing his sound with new perspectives and energy.

The Phantom Works EP showcases this evolution, featuring an electrifying remix from Black Barrel, a name synonymous with technical mastery in the Drum and Bass scene. This EP stands as a testament to Throe's ability to blur genre lines while maintaining the pulse of innovation. Whether through thunderous breaks, haunting atmospheres, or halftime grooves, Phantom Works invites a journey that reflects the essence of his dynamic role at Unchained Recordings and his growing impact on the global bass music community.

What initially attracted you to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and when did you make the move? Could you describe the lifestyle and atmosphere of your current location?

I’ve explored Southeast Asia a few times with family and friends, and every visit has been unforgettable. The warmth and friendliness of the people are unmatched, and the vibrant mix of weather, culture, and food is simply incredible. There’s an energy here that’s so inviting—it’s like every corner offers something new and fascinating to experience. Where I'm based, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is a gigantic city with a very dystopian/cyberpunk aesthetic, sometimes I feel like I'm in Blade Runner, I’ve never been more inspired in my life.

Can you provide insights into the emerging music scene across Southeast Asia, touching on other labels, artists, and the local audience? How would you characterize the region’s creative landscape?

The Bass music scene here is in its early days, and it’s thrilling to be part of something so fresh and full of potential. With so little competition, there’s a real chance to shape and define the sound from the ground up. The constant flow of backpackers looking for a good time adds a unique energy to the scene, while the locals, though new to the genre, are embracing it with open ears and open minds. And every now and then, I discover producers who are here, finding out Evgenii/Black Barrel was here! Ezor, and Jaysn to name some more doing intriguing things—it’s like uncovering hidden gems in an evolving landscape.

How did your collaboration with Unchained Recordings begin, and what is your current role within the label? Could you also introduce us to the founders and team who drive the vision behind this imprint?

In early 2020, I ran an Unchained Label night in Bristol, which sparked an ongoing connection. After signing a track with them for last year’s VA release and moving to Asia, I got further involved and now co-manage the label. Led by Lyndon Jarr and Daniel Power, with a talented team of Nick Immuno, Sagar Fragment, Kian Kray, and Just Bee, Unchained has been an incredible and creatively inspiring platform that’s supported me every step of the way.

Could you share the creative inspiration behind the Phantom Works EP, and delve into the significance of the titles and themes of each track?

I’m fascinated by cutting-edge tech, especially aircrafts. The world’s most advanced technology often comes from secretive military programs like Lockheed’s Skunk Works and Boeing’s Phantom Works. Despite the dark ethics, it’s hard not to be drawn in by the billions spent on these shadowy projects and the conspiracies surrounding them—like Skunk Works’ base in Area 51 and theories of alien tech from crash sites. Inspired by all this, I crafted some gritty, tech-heavy jungle. Pairing it with a sample from a radio show with ufologist Art Bell and a whistleblower on interdimensional beings at Area 51 infiltrating the government, you can tell I've been down a few rabbit holes!

What advice would you offer to someone considering a move to Southeast Asia?

Just go for it—don’t hesitate! Moving halfway around the world into a completely new culture and way of life might seem daunting, but it’s the most rewarding leap of faith you’ll ever take. Embrace the unknown and watch how much it transforms you.

In your opinion, what’s the best local food where you’re currently based?

Vietnamese food is insane, you can get a whole meal for less than a dollar. I often eat the popular pho (noodle soup) or banh mi’s (sandwiches). Another less famous but incredible dish is a Bo Kho, a spicy beef stew! Another great one is Com Tam at a restaurant called Com Tam Ba Ghien!

Are there any joint projects or releases you and your collaborators are working on that we can look forward to?

I’ve got another big project on Unchained in December, we can’t leak too much yet but trust me when I say it; watch this space!! Alongside that I’ve got another 140 EP on Incurzion Audio next year!

Lastly, could you share a favorite activity in Southeast Asia that provides a creative break from music?

Exploring has got to be the best, you can jump on a bus or plane for cheap and in any direction it’ll take you to either a hidden oasis or bustling mega city. You meet so many lovely people from all around the world! Asia is the spot!

Mission Statement

This project is crafted to be open and collaborative. Through this, we seek to explore core themes within a structured framework:

  • Symbiosis: Can artists and communities have better relations?
  • Meaning: What matters in pursuing and preserving artistic influences?
  • Intersectivity: Are there chartable commonalities within art and technology?

By asking questions, we hope to observe something new; and with that, offer our own perspective.
