JFRY talks inspirations, new-age Drum & Bass and more
Emerging from an unclassified genre is Dutch producer JFRY, based in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Fascinated by his incorporation of Breakbeats, Future Bass, and luscious melodies, what better way to showcase his blossoming style than to have him for a guest mix.
Some have coined the term Future Breaks which in some cases was sparked from the inspiration of Flume tracks many years ago. This deep-emotional hybrid sound of Drum & Bass style breaks, crispy basses, and weaving structured beats has come to light in the past few years which IMANU brought forward in 2019.
Not many have really taken on this style but JFRY truly stood out when he did. We briefly chatted to hear about his early beginnings, influences and his perspective on this spectrum of bass music.
When did you first discover your love for music?
I started playing the piano at an early age when my mom put me on her lap behind the piano. Slowly I was introduced to very old electronic music that my dad was listening to a lot back then. Eventually, I was exposed to music like Swedish House Mafia, but I didn’t really get too deep into EDM at the time. The real point where I started to focus more on electronic music was when I found out about Trap Nation. Started out way different than what I’m making now. I went through a whole journey of exploring genres and I eventually found Drum & Bass. That was the genre that resonated with me the most. It was the type of music I had been searching for all that time. Before I started making Drum & Bass, I went through so many different genres, I pretty much have tried almost everything. Now I’m fully focused on getting better at making it.
Who were some of your inspirations when you started to create the music you do now?
Sound-wise, Flume is a huge inspiration to me as well as SOPHIE. Apart from them, definitely, NOISIA, who are responsible for me really appreciating Drum & Bass. I started to get into the genre pretty late when people like IMANU and Buunshin were becoming well-known. They have been a great influence on me and that whole wave of people that make this type of sound.
I’m not 100% sure how this sound took root, in my eyes around the time Flume released ‘Skin’ it was really something else which inspired this whole wave of Future Bass. Then Quiet Bison came along with his own unique spin on it. Shortly after IMANU released ‘EGO’, more specifically the track ‘Dream Mentor’ which in my opinion was a landmark turning point.
What’s your perspective on how this style of music bloomed?
Around the time this sound sort of emerged, I was mostly focused on Future Bass which is also where the sound sort of came from, mostly because of Flume. Honestly, at one point, I thought I was only going to make Future Bass but then found Drum & Bass. Those two genres are really cool to merge because Drum & Bass has been around for a long time and every few years people try to reinvent it, and have a fresh new take. The old ways became stale, and at that particular time, Future Bass was one of the most interesting ways people came up with a new sound design which then was put into a different context.
What’s next in your musical journey?
Right now, I definitely want to focus on building my Drum & Bass sound because I still have a lot of ideas and things I want to try out. I've been working on a lot of it lately, so that's coming out in the next year, maybe a little this year. I'm working on a lot of other music that's not Drum & Bass, at some point that will also be coming out sometime next year, but I don't exactly know in what form yet. I want to have it make sense, it has to be in the right context.
Apart from that, I’m working with a few different artists on their projects, which are very different in style, but they will have some of my sound in them. Combined with their vision. There are Hip Hop, House, and RnB projects. It's very diverse. It really keeps it interesting for me to work on all those things because I can switch around.
Aside from music production, I recently had my first international DJ gig the other week in Prague at Cross Club. I’m going back there in December and I’m also playing a show in Delft, here in the Netherlands. Hoping to do a lot more shows next year!
