A look at EVA808's 'ÖÐRUVÍSI' LP
EVA808 is a groundbreaking and genre-adventurous Icelandic producer, merging the territories of underground music with broken dubstep and her personal take on what revolutionary electronic sound should feel like. Her original and distinct production surpasses conventionalism and predictability, encouraging a marriage of contrasts between sound and emotion.
Her uniqueness is attributed to this amalgamation of seemingly incompatible characteristics. Her debut album Sultry Venum is where EVA808 initiated this synthesis of the inharmonious, by intertwining elements of urgency and anticipation, tranquility and aggression, while simultaneously relying on light and heavy notes to form a perfect relationship between sound. ‘Skull in Mind’ is one of the tracks on the debut release that reflects EVA808’s work and showcases her versatile skills as an artist, breaking out of the confined predictability of the succeeding track.
On May 15th EVA808 has released her LP album - ÖÐRUVÍSI. Translated as ‘different’ from Icelandic, this album descends into a more solemn and ruminating route, exposing the artist and her craft from a far more personal and intimate angle. Each track communicates its own story, stimulating an interlaced sense between nostalgia and forward anticipation. The release touches on questions of identity and conscious belonging, in tracks such as ‘Gender’ and ‘When the MIRROR is steamy’, the music in itself becomes tangible and unavoidably ‘real’. Tracks transform themselves into an organic sound or sensation, either replicating a beating heart or a retrospective connection to one’s inner self.
‘Can’t Keep Me Down // Dragonfly’ strikes with its eminence and magnitude, releasing an ominous yet empowering sound. I find that this track embodies this album’s originality by blending the perfect climatic transition between background vocals and hard hitting instrumentals.
Another personal favorite of this release has to be ‘Fuglar Fljúga’. The start and the end mirror each other, with a fast-pace culmination at the heart of the track. I see it as quite different to the rest of the release, as Eva concludes the album in an upbeat and positive tone.
EVA808 flirtatiousness with juxtaposing unification between intensity and serenity is carried throughout the album, helping to unify tracks in a sort of obscure interconnection. With the range of sound being continuously interchanged between surfacing calamity and fundamental serenity. In ‘Acid Shower’, this battle of sensory sound reflects EVA’s journey from the old self to the new. Yet, even in this outward confusion, there is this prevalent instrumental simplicity embedded into each track, constructing the foundation of both contrasting auditory sensations.
ÖÐRUVÍSI is an album that not only reinforces EVA808’s position as an innovational and groundbreaking artist, but also foregrounds rawness and purity of her musical production. As she equates innovation with tradition.
