A glimpse of Ell Murphy & Mani Festo's 'Turning' EP
London-based artists Ell Murphy and Mani Festo have each been climbing the creative ranks in recent years. With an impressive combined catalogue, they have gained recognition for their underground breaks & jungle-inspired anthems respectively. Their latest release speaks to this further, as they push forth more of that good sound on Jucey Tunes with their Turning EP.
Though short as a 2-track release, both pieces pack a punch exploring a landscape of euphoric pads, nostalgic vocals, glitchy breaks, and searing bases. On the surface, you get an obvious thrill from the sonics, but as you listen deeper, it's obvious that they have done something special.
Turning
The first track goes straight in with the catchy 4x4 drum pattern and soft vocals. Low end rumbling basses come in to take the track into full force with a series of alterations in break hooks. Intermittently, we see saw-like basses introduced with transpose-tempered breaks—it's easy to get lost in this track.
Dreamin
This track is a jungle-influenced journey. We see more of those soft vocals, but this time—being driven by some alternate bass & drum styles. Something worth noting is the outro of this track. A gentle roll and automation of the high-pass on repeated vocals pull everything into perspective as the releases come to a close.
> Some final thoghts
The Turning EP is another great example of what can happen when 2 artists with an obviously similar creative outlet come together. The release is short-and-sweet, and an absolutely fitting track for Jucey Tunes.
