Catching up with Tek Genesis
Tek Genesis has been on a rampage this year. Following his 'Dualism' EP back in May, and his single 'Eterna' on Bass Rush back in August, we're excited to sit down with the Australia-based artist to gain some insights into his workflow and insights for 2021.
Hey man, thanks for taking the time to speak with us. Tell us about yourself. Where are you from, how did you get into music?
Of course thanks for having me on! I'm from Australia. I first got into music production probably about 6-7 years when I was given a cracked version of FL on my school laptop lmao. From there I kinda taught myself the ins and outs of using a DAW moving onto Ableton a few years after that. Aside from that I also like to do some visual design work as an alternative creative outlet.
Loving your track on the Bass Rush compilation, can you talk us over your creative process on the track?
A lot of that tune came together in one session when I was playing around with Ableton's 'operator' & 'matrix reverb' plugin trying to resample some cool sounds. I cut the resamples up to work with a drum flow I was working on at the time and it just melded together nicely.
What inspires your sound in music?
I feel like a whole array of media inspires my music, anything from art to film. I find media especially helpful as it 'sets a mood' for what I'm working on. Listening to other genres of music helps expand and stylistically develop your work because you pick up on new techniques and methods, and you can start to meld these genres seamlessly into something super unique and interesting.
Have you been affected by the restrictions in your area? What's your 2021 looking like?
Absolutely. Sydney's nightlife was already struggling to thrive IMO and now with the heavier COVID restrictions put in place it's (obviously) made it impossible to play any shows in the last 6-7 months. In terms of day-today though, luckily I'm an essential worker so haven't had many issues on that front. 2021 is shaping up to be heaps of new music and hopefully some shows (provided its reasonable to do so haha).
What are you working on right now?
Currently working on a couple of singles, an official remix and an EP hopefully soon. I've recently made some cool creative strides in my music recently so I'm keen to start putting stuff out a bit more regularly. New music is heavier and leans a lot closer to dubstep. Its been described to me from MYTHM, an artist friend of mine, as "riddim with a left-field flex" lmao
Any cool artists you're listening to right now?
Ahh so many good artists I'm listening to atm. Here's a few; Point Clare, Mythm, Knoir, syzy, Buunshin, Ell!psis, jack slade, Aleph. All of them are super underrated IMO.
