A peek at Ankou's Cosmogony EP + QA
Following his recent Fatum EP on Inspected, Poland-based artist Ankou is back on the label with his next release, the Cosmogony EP.
We've been closely following Ankou over the past few years, and let me state something before we go into this... The progression in his creative and productive abilities has grown at a rate I have rarely seen in the industry, and the dedication to his sound is extremely apparent–this shouldn't go unmentioned. The Cosmogony EP is a 6-track monster, featuring a delicate variation in styles & genres, many of which seem a new exploration for the upcoming artist.
When approaching a multi-genre release, it can be difficult to glue the styles together in a way that makes them fit, more so than a single-genre release, but Ankou has brought together these varied sounds into something that feels truly fulfilling–an absolute delight to listen to from start to finish. As a peak into some personal favourites from the release, I'd like to outline a few words on his tracks Underneath & Forlorn.
Underneath
I first heard this track on his recent Rendah Guest Mix, and I remember thinking at that moment "Surely this can't be Adam". The track is so wildly outrageous in its formation. Energetic drums, delicate snappy snares, and old-radio style vocals, all balance together in such a way that it really catches your attention. The drum pattern seems almost out of sync for its tempo, which brings a left-field feel to the track as a whole, very impressive stuff.
Forlorn
One of the more melodic tracks of the EP, Forlorn explores a 4x4 house-style track, featuring a creative use of stuttering pads and eerie tape-like distortion. Over everything, this track presents the listener with some information, a statement that addresses Ankou's capabilities beyond his usual dungeon-crawler aesthetic.

Hey man, how has your experience within Inspected so far? It’s great to see you pushing on with more and more releases with them.
Inspected is a label I've been a fan of for years. So far I've had nothing but great experience working with them. I'm extremely grateful that they saw potential in my music and believe in me.
Tell us a little about your inspirations for the general vibe of the EP.
Cosmogony is a term referring to a model concerning the origin of either the cosmos or the universe. It appears in most of the mythologies but I got mostly inspired reading about Norse mythology. For example, Yggdrasil is the sacred tree being the central point of the world around which there exists all of the nine mythological realms. With this EP I wanted to show a variety of styles that inspire me but keep it coherent.
It feels like you’ve really homed in on your sound, is there anything different that you’ve been trying to achieve? Have you been exploring any new tools?
I've been experimenting with some new VSTs such as PhasePlant and other Kilohearts plugins but mostly I've been using pretty much the same tools. I started working on 'Cosmogony' just after finishing 'Fatum' so I spent about a year working on this EP.
What’s your favourite track from the release? And why?
It's really hard to pick one, all of them are kind of special for me and I think this EP is my best work so far but if I were to choose only one I'd have to pick the title track. I spent about 2 years working on this track and since the beginning, I felt it has to be a part of something bigger than just a single.
“One of his broadest, wildest deep space adventures to date, it’s a journey of extremes as he articulates what makes him tick artistically, conceptually, but most of all musically.”/ Inspected
