A look at AKOV's 'Transcendent EP'
AKOV! Half bear, half…slug? Yeaaah, that’s what’s up! The fusion we have so desperately been needing as Alexander Ushakov makes his Slug Wife debut with ‘Transcendent’.
This mighty display of versatility sees him pull off rugged halftime jams, a funky Neurohop collab with Screamarts, and of course his signature Neurobreaks sound - which we’re gonna be hearing a whole lot more of! This release signals new beginnings for Alex as he transcends to a new realm of sonic endeavors, leaving behind a claw-shaped gouge in the Neurofunk community.
Bringing the swagga in true Slug Wife fashion, AKOV kicks off the EP with not one, but two chonky halftime beats ‘Transcendent’ and subsequently ‘Gravitas’ leaving you enough time to get your groove shoes on.
Both are two sides of the same coin and deliver exactly what you’d expect from AKOV - Gut punching bass hooks and drums that would splinter all the Ikea furniture in your house.
With the slugs fully primed, AKOV slips in the cornerstone of his future sound “Make Some Noise”, which actually features a verse from the man himself under the rap pseudonym Urso as well as a verse from Neurofunks esteemed MC Multiplex. AKOV undeniably draws a fresh dynamic to the breakbeat sound which accurately represents something you’d expect to hear if The Prodigy were to go Neuro-Punk rock energy with the blistering weight of screwface bass! This is where all roads lead as AKOV announces his move to accelerate the genre with the launch of his new label Symbiotik Records.
The party doesn’t stop as we finish up with “Disco Biscuit”, a jazzy fresh Neurohop collaboration with Screamarts. You’d be best off popping this on a Sunday night before work rather than a fistful of stimulants, giving you all the synapse zapping benefits without the dreadful aftermath, and it’s sure to keep you moving 'til sunrise.
This is certainly the start of exciting things from AKOV if they hadn’t already been exciting enough. A new venture that’s bolstered through the support of Slug Wife tells us that he shows absolutely no signs of stopping - and no one’s getting in his way!
