A word with HOLOGRAPHIC

The mysterious London-based trio HOLOGRAPHIC has been making noise in the shadows for quite some time. Their debut EP ‘The Escape’ was released back in 2020, followed by a single titled ‘Splasher’ in 2022 featured on VISION’s ‘MISSION 02’ compilation. They even joined in to support the ‘Together with Ukraine’ compilation with a VIP of ‘Fancy Candles’ off their debut EP to help raise funds for the Ukranian Red Cross Society.

This year they have taken 2024 by storm dropping single after single the past few months leading up to their new self-released EP ‘Moon Glass’ which finally dropped in full this past Friday with the final single as a cheeky Drum & Bass VIP of the title track. Presenting five uniquely crafted sonic endeavors that truly redefine Bass music as we know it. Reshaping the known and unknown elements entirely from their imagination. Winding their way into existence seamlessly engaging their collective sound while aligning their vision. Encapsulating their cutting-edge experimentations and their sonic direction.

Representing the combined talents of three seasoned producers, each with a rich history in the Electronic music scene - sonically centered around experimental beats with high-caliber production. A whirlwind of curiosity around who they are and how long they’ve been producing. With such an enigmatic manner it’s hard to say how long each of them has been making music exactly but to my knowledge, they have been creating music for well over a decade, one of which has even had releases on countless top-tier labels, while some of their music dates all the way back to 2008. You could easily do some research to make guesses about who they are but even so, you won’t be able to find out who they all are. Will the mystery remain a secret?

I caught up with them to ask how they started and hear how their future plans would unfold.

Not to mention their mesmerizing music videos accompanying each release further diving deep into their creative visions.

Where & when did you guys first meet?

In the backrooms of who knows what parties many moons ago. Friendships developed and a shared love of particular vibes of music was so apparent we decided to get in the studio together. We all loved the idea of collaborating on music and aiming to make visuals for as many of the tracks we’d been writing as humanly possible. Collectively we’ve always had a strong interest in music, visuals, and film which naturally lead us on a path to building an AV show.

What inspired HOLOGRAPHIC?

We all have inspirations from across the entire musical spectrum, all three of us bring a lot of different influences to the collective. The main point of inspiration for the project came from the idea of what might happen if we pooled these influences together to create something new.

Why keep it anonymous?

To be honest we never planned to. We had been working together for a couple of years on tracks before we came up with a name. The project was only “secret” because we hadn’t named it yet. That just kinda stuck and it got people talking about who we are, so we just leaned into it. It’s quite nice to let the music and art speak for itself.

With all the traction from Noisia Radio and everyone else, why keep it hidden?

Because it is fun :) It's actually not hidden, it’s just not obvious. There are plenty of easter eggs out there that would allow someone to figure it out if they wanted to.

What’s the workflow like?

We tend to spend the first few hours sound designing till we find something we really like and have built a comprehensive sound palette. Sound design with all three of us enables much more human input. We become a bit like a human octopus. Then we just start writing. We write so many sections and drops. With all of us we throw so many ideas into the pot that we really get to refine and distill what we’ve made into its prime cuts. It’s a bit like sifting for gold. Sometimes ideas don’t really take shape till very late in the session but once we find a hook we can really develop, the rest of the track almost writes itself. We’ve been writing together for over 8 years now. We have quite a back catalog.

Future plans as a collective?

Monthly releases will continue indefinitely. First Friday of every month you can expect a tune from us. We have a growing stockpile of tunes that we wanted to just open the tap on. We are constantly writing and thought it was about time. The first track off EP 3 is due on 2/8/24. That’ll run for 6 months and EP 4 will follow directly from that. From then who knows, there may, be murmurs of an album.

What challenges have you all faced with this project?

Occasional small furry ninjas and the odd stubbing of one’s toe. Inability to cook a pizza. Wasps.

Who and how did the visuals for Holographic develop?

It really depends on the track. They all have their own character and we just try to present that in a visual way. We decided to just try any approach that seemed fitting, not limiting ourselves to any style or form. It’s taken us to some interesting places. The early videos were made with VR. We recognized how VR could be used to try a hands-on approach to building worlds and narratives. After some trial and error, we found a method to get some workable results so we just dived into the matrix and started experimenting. Those videos set up an idea to move forward with some kind of thread to the visual work. The subsequent videos, although at times quite abstract, are an exploration of that initial sense of wonder and possibility. We are trying to push ourselves in all areas of artistic and technical approaches to just see what we can come up with. We love film, we love visual art. Making things like this for our music just seems natural.

Our initial idea when we started the project was to design a large-scale projection-mapped AV experience and tour it. The music videos are an extension and evolution of creating a show and visual experience of this complexity. We are trying to build out a story, maybe our story who knows, and develop our own little universe of sorts.

Outlook on the current Bass/Electronic scene in the EU & US? And where do you guys fit?

Things are looking good right now. With the roots of both Dubstep and Drum & Bass having a resurgence the genres we love the most are thriving. It's hard to pin down where we fit as we don't stick to one sound or even genre. We just know we love fusing influences we collectively appreciate and creating our take on different styles of bass music.

What do you hope to achieve with this project?

As mentioned, we’ve been working towards building a full AV show. We continue to set our sights on a grand design for a future tour and evolving the narratives. But in the short term, we just enjoy making noise together and want to continue doing so.

Also, we all really like trees. We’d like to see some of the biggest and oldest trees around the world. Also dogs.

This project exists to research the topic of creative context within underground & experimental arts. Through the lens of creative-journalism, we explore the life-cycle of artists and their projects, in an otherwise undocumented space.
